Hello and welcome back to Mental Toughness Monday! Today, we’re talking about Motivational Allies – those crucial elements that keep us going when the going gets tough. So, let’s dive in!”
Ever seen ‘The Rookie’? It’s a heartwarming tale of Jim Morris, played by Dennis Quaid, a high school coach who rediscovers his love for baseball, and ends up going to the major leagues. It’s not just a movie; it’s a lesson in motivation and psychology. There’s this moment when Morris’s wife asks him, ‘Do you still love it?’ That’s the crux, fellas. Love for what you do is a powerful motivator.
Let’s face it, we all have days when we’re not at 100%. But, do you still love what you do? That’s what keeps you going. Like Morris, we all need to find that spark, that passion that drives us.
Now, let’s talk about Self-Determination Theory, or SDT. This theory breaks down motivation into three parts: Autonomy, Competence, and Support Network. I like to call them ‘I choose,’ ‘I can,’ and ‘I belong.’
First up, Autonomy – ‘I choose.’ It’s about having control over your actions. When you choose your path, you’re more invested in it. It’s the power of saying, ‘This is my journey.’ We are happier and more motivated when it is our choice.
Next, Competence – ‘I can.’ It’s believing in your abilities. When you’re confident in what you can do, challenges become less daunting. It’s like wearing a superhero cape every day. It’s also about knowing that your succesful past experiences are a predictor of future success!
And finally, the Support Network – ‘I belong.’ It’s about feeling connected and supported. Remember Jim Morris’s story? It was the people around him that kept his dream alive. We all need a team that believes in us. If you don’t have a great team around you, build one! You can build greatness around you with great friends, coaches, and coworkers that can support you in the difficult times.
These three allies – Autonomy, Competence, and Support Network – are your tools to build self-confidence and motivation. They are the antidote to burnout. It’s about knowing ‘I can do this,’ ‘I chose to be here,’ and ‘I belong to this team.’
So, coaches, as you guide your young athletes, help them find these allies in themselves. Teach them to love the game, to trust in their abilities, and to cherish the support they have. That’s how champions are made, not just on the field but in life.
Remember, it’s not just about winning games; it’s about nurturing these motivational allies. Do that, and you’ll see your team thrive.
Thanks for tuning in to Mental Toughness Monday. Join us next week as we continue to explore the psychology of coaching and how to foster resilience in our teams. Don’t forget to subscribe, and remember, every Monday is a chance to start fresh and build mental toughness!
