Work ethic, discipline, problem solving, and teamwork are just a few of the key lessons I learned while playing football in my childhood. Little did I know that some of the most influential friendships of my life would also be formed with teammates during those years and on those teams. I am passionate about football because it helped me build a foundation for the rest of my life. Now I want to help others find the same benefits in their lives.

A few of my coaching philosophies:

  • Confidence – My #1 job as a coach is to help each boy find and build confidence both on and off the field
  • Understanding – Optimal confidence for these boys will come from helping them:
    • Understand what is expected of them
    • Understand their jobs and responsibilities
    • Understand how to execute and achieve the expected results
  • Effort – Confidence comes from knowing you gave maximum effort. The fastest path to success is usually through consistent effort. Mistakes are usually softened by maximum effort.

“I was fortunate to have some fun and amazing coaches over the years who not only contributed to my lifelong love of football, but taught me lessons that still have an impact on my life!

A few of my coaching philosophies include:

There is power in the team: The kids will make friendships this year that can last a lifetime and discover that when individuals put team goals over their own wants, amazing things can happen both on and off the field.

Fundamentals matter: Especially at this young age, learning good habits now is key to success in the future!

Hard work can be fun: You get out what you put in, and anything worthwhile requires hard work.. the secret is that this can be a lot of fun!

“I grew up in Salt Lake and started playing football in the Ute Conference when I was 7 years old. I went on to play college football at Stanford University and coached football at Syracuse University. I have a passion and love for the game of football and I believe it to be the ultimate team sport.

As a coach, my top priorities are to help players develop a love and passion for football all while ensuring they learn the proper techniques in order to play the game safely. As part of that process they will learn to embrace adversity, develop physical and mental toughness, and approach every day with a positive attitude and extraordinary effort. Football is all about working relentlessly to be the best version of yourself such that you can be the best teammate possible, and I can’t wait to get started working with the Mity Mite age group!”

“I have been immersed in football most of my life and it has shaped who I am. Football so acutely teaches a person how to be a team player, to compete, fight through adversity, and also helps develop a level of mental toughness in a very unique way. Football encourages players to step out of their comfort zone because their teammates need them—every player must do their part on the field in order for the team to have success. These lessons carry over into every aspect of a player’s life far beyond the field.

Coaching football has been so rewarding as I watch these young players develop and grow into resilient, smart, respectful team players while establishing lifelong friendships that are founded in the brotherhood of football. Can’t wait for the fall!”

I have had the good fortune to participate in and around football since the age of 9 years old. I played QB and Free Safety at Cottonwood High School. I went on to play college football as a Quarterback at Snow College and Utah State University. I have also been fortunate to coach at Cottonwood High School (QB’s), Olympus High School (QB’s), Alta High School (QB’s and OC), Snow College (QB’s and OC), and NC State University (GA, QB’s and Special Teams). Football has given me incredible opportunities. However, it’s the lessons learned over the years that I am particularly grateful for. These lessons are what I base some of my coaching philosophy around.

In my personal life I am a Sport Psychology Consultant (Mental Performance Coach). Football, as well as my current employment, have taught me some great things to consider.

A few of my philosophies include:

Progress is more important than perfection: We live in a society that bases everything on numbers, wins, and losses. I believe strongly that having process goals and orientation as a team will lead to results taking care of themselves.

Reps are important: At a young age, it is important that repetitions are high so that kids can develop their coordination and skill. Coaches play a significant role in ensuring maximum amount of reps for the players in their charge.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable: Football is a great team sport. It is also hard. It can be scary. It is important to step a little bit out of our comfort zone every day. That’s where all the magic happens. It is where all confidence is built.

Be the best player FOR the team before trying to be the best player ON the team: Everyone can be the best player FOR the team. This includes complimenting, helping, and cheering on teammates. These are the best types of players. If you are only interested in being the best player on the team, and you aren’t already a great player for your team, typically the results are disastrous.

Sometimes you, sometimes me, always us: Football is the greatest game on Earth. I believe this is true because it includes all shapes, all sizes, and all backgrounds. Whether you are involved with the band, filming games, or scoring touchdowns, it takes a team. There will be days when you are the star, there will be days when your best friend is the star. When we play together, it’s always US that is the star. It is amazing how much we can accomplish when we don’t care who gets the credit.

I embarked on my football journey at the age of 13, playing in the Ute Conference, then going on to play for Highland High School and Southern Utah University as an offensive lineman. To this day, choosing to play football ranks among the top three decisions in my life. Football isn’t just a game; it’s a community and a brotherhood. Many of my closest relationships have roots in football. I genuinely believe that football is the ultimate team sport, preparing individuals for the joys and challenges of life like no other extracurricular activity.

As a coach, my goal is to cultivate a culture of togetherness, where players comprehend that they’re competing for more than themselves. It’s crucial to instill a love for competition and a mindset of continual improvement. Ultimately, as a youth football coach, my priority is to nurture a love for the game through coaching safe and effective practice and play. While winning is enjoyable, it’s equally important to prepare players to advance in their fundamentals and game knowledge at each stage of their youth, ensuring they’re ready for high school-level play.

I’m thrilled to coach this group of football players and eagerly anticipate the relationships that will unfold!
