Welcome back to Mental Toughness Monday, where we tackle the real challenges of coaching. Today’s topic: Going Beyond Motivation. We’ve all felt that initial rush of excitement with a new challenge, but what happens when that fades? Let’s dive in!”
Motivation can be a fickle friend. It’s high at the start – like the thrill of a new season – but it dwindles. That’s when the real test begins. The greats don’t just rely on motivation; they master ‘the lonely work.’ It’s about consistency, not just excitement.
I’m reminded of a story – maybe you’ve heard it – about a father and son who dreamt of owning a stallion. Their journey was a rollercoaster of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ events, but the father’s response? Always ‘Maybe you’re right, maybe not.’ This tale teaches us not to hastily label our experiences but to see them as parts of a larger journey. In our google and McDonald’s society, we are constantly getting the answers we want, when we want them. Sometimes it is a good idea to pause, gather more information, watch, wait, and observe. The answers will come, but unlike google, we have to be patient.
This brings us to the heart of today’s message: Mindset over motivation. Ethan Hawke’s book ‘Rules for a Knight’ offers a powerful insight. In it, a young knight learns that people’s experiences are shaped by their attitudes. The lesson? Our mindset shapes our reality, more than any fleeting feeling of motivation.
So, coaches, remember, it’s not about waiting for motivation to strike. It’s about building a mindset of commitment, focus, and resilience. It’s about teaching our young athletes to see beyond the immediate and embrace the journey with all its ups and downs.
Encourage your team to develop this mindset. Show them that true strength lies in how they respond to challenges, not just in their victories. Teach them to be knights in their own right, armed with the power of a positive attitude and unwavering commitment.
As we wrap up today’s Mental Toughness Monday, take this thought with you: Motivation may light the fire, but it’s the strength of character that keeps it burning. Build that character in your team, and watch them transform into not just good players, but great people.
Thanks for joining us. Stay strong, stay committed, and remember, every Monday is a chance to go beyond motivation. Tune in next week for more insights and inspiration. Together, let’s build teams that last!
